Signature Healthcare Radiation Oncology, a leading provider of advanced comprehensive cancer care in the Brockton area, offers accredited patient navigation to help guide and support patients through the entire medical and treatment process. Signature Healthcare Patient Navigator, Nicole DeLano, RN, is one the first nurse navigators in the country to be accredited by Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+).
Signature Healthcare, which has been accredited by the Commission on Cancer as a Community Comprehensive Cancer Program, also recently announced a new collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) that will bring comprehensive cancer care to Signature Healthcare’s Brockton Hospital location. Building on the organizations’ established clinical affiliation, patients in Southeastern Massachusetts will have access to a full range of cancer services close to home, supported by BIDMC’s pioneering cancer treatment strategies and research.
“We are thrilled that Nicole DeLano has achieved accreditation as a Patient Navigator. With a strong background in oncology and extensive experience working with patients, Nicole is a tremendous resource for Signature Healthcare patients and our commitment to providing comprehensive cancer management, including supporting patients when they need it most,” said Steven Lane, MD, Chief of Radiation Oncology, Signature Healthcare.
Patient Navigators guide patients through the cancer care continuum from diagnosis through survivorship. Clinically trained, navigators help identify and remove barriers to timely and appropriate cancer treatment and act as a central point of contact for patients. A critical member of the multidisciplinary cancer team, the navigator coordinates all components involved in cancer care including surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, social workers, patient education, community support; and financial and insurance assistance.
Nurse Navigator DeLano has a thorough understanding of the healthcare system and has established medical relationships in the community to help patients find credible resources, secure proper treatment, and understand complex protocols and terminology. She is a trained specialist who supports patients through the entire medical and treatment process.
“I’m proud to guide my patients through every step of the way and advocate on their behalf to ensure that they have access to important information, critical resources and the right medical specialists,” said DeLano. “The AONN accreditation process was a great way to further my development as a patient navigator and look forward to using what I’ve learned to expand our program to serve more patients.”
The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) is the largest national specialty organization dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life by defining, enhancing, and promoting the role of oncology nurse and patient navigators. DeLano was one of nearly 150 nurse navigators to take the Oncology Nurse Navigator-Certified Generalist™ (ONN-CG) and Oncology Patient Navigator-Certified Generalist™ (OPN-CG™) certification exams administered at the recent AONN+ national conference.
