Bone Density Scan

Bone Densitometry Scan

Bone densitometry, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DEXA, uses a very small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body to measure bone loss. At Signature Healthcare, one of its uses can be to help diagnose osteoporosis and assess a patient's risk for developing fractures. DEXA is simple, quick and noninvasive.

This exam is routinely performed every two years and requires little to no special preparation. Tell your doctor and the technologist if there is a possibility you are pregnant or if you recently had a barium exam or received an injection of contrast material for a CT scan or Nuclear Medicine radioisotope injection. You may have to wait 10 to 14 days before undergoing a DEXA test.
