Brockton Hospital School Of Nursing

BROCKTON, MA (May 8, 2020) –  The Yawkey Foundation awarded Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital a $1 million charitable grant this week to help further the organization’s mission of providing high quality healthcare to individuals in Brockton and the surrounding communities.

“To receive this generous gift from the Yawkey Foundation during National Nurses Week is quite meaningful,” said Kim Hollon, President and CEO of Signature Healthcare. “With nurses being front and center battling COVID-19, this gift from the Yawkey Foundation and the opportunity to name the Brockton School of Nursing Building reflects the kind of investment that Tom and Jean Yawkey made over the course of their lives, and perpetuates their philanthropic legacy by improving access to healthcare and economic mobility in Brockton.”

In recognition of the generous gift, the Brockton Hospital School of Nursing Building has been named the Yawkey Center.

The building officially opened in September of 2019 and serves 245 nursing students from Greater Brockton, with 76 percent residing in the gateway cities of Brockton, Fall River, New Bedford and Taunton.

The original Brockton Hospital School of Nursing opened in 1897 and has trained thousands of nurses over its tenured history.  Many of the graduates of the School are employed in nursing and nursing leadership roles at Signature Healthcare and in our community. New graduates are sought out by some of the best healthcare organizations in the region.

For over 80 years, Tom and Jean Yawkey, and the Foundations they established, have supported the construction and ongoing support of many hospitals and provided significant support for scholarships at respected schools.

“Our Trustees can think of no better time to demonstrate our deep and humble appreciation to nurses - and all healthcare workers - than with this grant to support Brockton Hospital’s School of Nursing, their students and graduates, and the patients they serve with care, compassion, and expertise,” said Maureen H. Bleday, Chief Executive Officer of Yawkey Foundation.

With this gift, Brockton Hospital joins an impressive list of world-class hospitals that have benefitted from Yawkey Foundation support over many decades. Brockton Hospital is proud to name its School of Nursing Building in honor of the Yawkeys and the Foundation they established.
