Nursing Students to Raise Awareness of College Student Food Insecurity, Hunger And Related Health Implications
Monday, January 28, 2019
BHSON students will be heading to the National Student Nurse Association (NSNA) annual convention again this year in April. The 4 day convention will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. This will mark the 3rd year that our students serve as constituent delegates in the House of Delegates at the national level.
Our Student Nurse Association (SNA) Chapter President, senior student Tayler Medeiros and freshmen students Denielle Cesvette, and Joana Lopes have written a resolution they hope to present at convention to nursing student constituents from universities and colleges across the United States and its territories. The resolution is written to raise awareness to nurses about college student food insecurity, hunger and challenges they face. Food Insecurity can result in serious health implications including anxiety and depression, unhealthy eating, alcohol use behaviors and poorer academic success. Therefore it is important for nurses to assess college students for this risk factor.
The resolution must be approved by the NSNA board prior presentation but we are optimistic it will move forward. When approved this will be the very first resolution to be presented by our BHSON nursing students. Great work students!
