Behavioral Health

The inpatient psychiatric unit is a 22 bed locked, short term unit which provides diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders classified under the American Psychiatric Association, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th edition. This includes individuals with severe & persistent mental illness, medical co-morbidities, substance use disorders, difficult behaviors & development disabilities.   

The unit provides individualized person-centered, trauma-informed care and is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. Individuals are treated by a multidisciplinary team including psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists, rehabilitation specialists, nursing staff as well as mental health workers. Milieu therapy, occupational therapy and functional groups are offered on a daily basis. Those without contraindications have fresh air breaks as well.

Our Emergency Department has a designated area for people needing a psychiatric evaluation.  Each individual is assessed by a psychiatric triage clinician, with input from a psychiatrist as appropriate.
