ImPACT is a program used at all levels to create baselines for athletes, so when they experience a concussion, there is a way to measure against their normal reaction time. You cannot “grade” a concussion, the same hit to the head affects different people in different ways. Every single athlete at a professional level does the ImPact test as a baseline. The test shows us a combination of memory, spatial recognition, color recognition, word recognition, reaction time and irritability.

Even if your child has not established a baseline with the ImPACT test, if they experience a concussion, they must be cleared by a physician before returning to play. Signature Healthcare's ImPACT trained and certified Emergency Department physicians are available to see your student athlete for an examination. If you are interested in more information on the program, please call 855-60-SPORT (77678).

ImPACT Testing

Why Use ImPACT?

ImPACT can help answer difficult questions about an athlete's readiness to return to play, protecting them from the serious consequences of returning too soon. While traditional neurological and radiologic procedures such as CT, MRI, and EEG are helpful in identifying many serious concerns (e.g. skull fracture, hematoma, contusion), they are not as useful in identifying the effects of concussion. As a result, doctors often must rely on subjective observations or a patient's self-reporting of symptoms to diagnose and track a concussion. This is where ImPACT can help.

Using ImPACT to implement baseline and post-injury neurocognitive testing can help objectively evaluate the concussed athlete's post-injury condition and recovery to prevent the cumulative effects of concussion. And in the event that baseline testing is not possible, ImPACT has a normative database of thousands of non-injured athletes, which can also be used for effective comparison.

Who is Behind ImPACT?

Mark Lovell, PhD, ABPN, Joseph Maroon, MD, and Michael Collins, PhD, founded ImPACT in 2002. These professionals are world leaders in the field of concussion management and are committed to the ongoing development of advanced concussion management tools. ImPACT team members have dedicated the past 15 years to the scientific study of sports-related concussion and the clinical application of this knowledge throughout professional and amateur sports.

What is ImPACT?

ImPACT is a sophisticated, research-based computer test developed to help clinicians evaluate an athlete’s recovery following concussion. The program begins with a 20-minute computerized test administered in the preseason for a baseline, and includes puzzles and tasks that measure a variety of factors. When a concussion is suspected, a follow-up test is administered to see if the results have changed from the baseline. This comparison helps to diagnose and manage the concussion. Follow-up tests can be administered over days or weeks so you can continue to track the injury.

"I was in the E.R. on Thanksgiving Day with my son Timothy who suffered a mild concussion in his High School football game…I just want to take a moment to recognize the professionalism, ability and personable nature of everyone that we came into contact with...I was very satisfied with our treatment on that day. It is comforting to have such a great hospital and more importantly such excellent care within minutes of our home. Tim is just fine, and he won his football game on Thanksgiving despite East Bridgewater being huge underdogs!"

"I'm writing to tell you of a fantastic experience we had a the Brockton Hospital ER. My daughter Rianna was taken off the soccer field yesterday by ambulance and transported to Brockton. The minute we entered the department, the staff was so compassionate, so attentive, kind and considerate, while at the same time, extremely professional. Honestly, everyone, even the woman who took our information was fabulous. Rianna's nurse, Sean Conley, was there with a smile whenever we needed him. Dr Grini was amazing. He explained everything that was going on and why, and even though I'm sure he had other patients, he made us feel like Rianna was the only one. The Emergency Room staff at Brockton Hospital were wonderful. I have so much confidence in their ability and respect for how they do it."
